Week 4: Surprise

Ghostie
Done using an LED torch and some 6.5 second exposures. I pasted 4 shots together because I don't have the co-ordination or maximum shutter speed to do it all in one go. It's a lot harder than I thought. I tried to write "boo" but gave up because it was nowhere near legible.

Week 3: Learning

Yay cephalapods
I thought a still life with some fossil ID books would work well here. It's nothing I'm terribly proud of. Not bad, but not that exciting. Thought I'd have a go at something else:

This was so much more fun to do. Not lit so well. I used a desk lamp which was too dim It's hard to do this when one of your hands is out of action.

Week 2: theme, history

Closed

The Local Studies Library closed its doors for the last time on Christmas eve. In the Autumn, the new Hull History Centre will open, incorporating Local Studies, Hull Archives and University Archives. It will certainly be better for researchers, better for the stock and better for the staff, but I'll miss the old place.

Three shots stitched in to a vertical panorama. The lighting is really tricky in there. For atmosphere's sake, I relied purely on window light to get some stark contrast. It is quite hard to capture the ranges of brightness, and I used a grad filter to allow me to lighten the foreground a touch. This would have been so much easier if I hadn't accidentally left my tripod when I rushed out the house in the morning.

Week 1, theme: Reflection

Not quite what I was going for. I was hoping for the reflection to be a lot clearer and more dominant. I suppose I'd need the buildings to be strongly lit and the window still in shadow for that to work, but the sun barely showed itself all week. Never the less, I've been wanting to try some street candids for a while and I don't think this is a bad start to the year's pictures.

Begin

Last year I set myself a challange to take a photo a day for a year. I failed miserably after about a month. One a day was too much and I couldn't keep up and make sure I got something I was happy with. I did enjoy the motivation it gave me to get out and explore and I kind of missed that once I'd given up.

I saw a post by simonTALM on Talk Photography suggesting a similar idea. The challange is one picture a week based on a pre-chosen theme. Since that seems more manageable, here I go.
